What is an MOT retest?
After an MOT fail, a retest confirms repairs. Learn partial retest rules, typical time limits, and how retests differ from a brand-new test.

Full retest vs partial retest
A full MOT retest is a complete test again, usually charged at the normal test fee. It happens when many items failed, the time limit for a partial retest passed, or the vehicle was repaired elsewhere without a partial retest agreement.
A partial retest (sometimes called a partial re-examination) covers only the items that failed or related work. GOV.UK explains when test centres can offer a free or reduced-fee partial retest after a fail.
Always confirm fees and timing with the MOT station — MOTCheckers does not set retest prices. Official overview: GOV.UK — After failing an MOT.
Working-day limits
For many fail types, you can leave the vehicle at the centre for repair and get a partial retest without a full second fee. If you take the car away, GOV.UK describes returning within 10 working days to the same centre for a partial retest on certain items.
Clocks and eligible defect lists can change. Treat 10 working days as guidance to verify on GOV.UK, not a guarantee for every failure type.
Driving between fail and retest
If the previous MOT certificate is still valid and the fail was not dangerous, limited driving may be permitted while you arrange repairs — but dangerous defects prohibit use on the road.
When the MOT has already expired, driving is even more restricted. Read can you drive without an MOT? and official guidance before moving the vehicle.
After the retest pass
Once the retest pass is recorded, MOT history updates with the new result and expiry date (usually 12 months from the pass, subject to early-test rules).
Check the updated record on MOT test results or the free MOT checker to confirm the certificate is in force before long journeys.
Frequently asked questions
Is a partial MOT retest always free?+
No. It depends on whether the car stayed at the centre, which items failed, and whether you return within the allowed period. Ask the tester for a written quote before authorising work.
Can any garage do an MOT retest?+
Only authorised MOT test centres can issue an official retest. A general repair garage can fix the car, but the retest must be completed at an authorised tester.
